Is there any objection in the rules to making oars entirely from plywood? This would result in a plywood "box" section hollow oar with a plywood blade. The handle end might be solid timber or a timber core to a plywood shell. Hi Dave, the measurement rules state "7.1 Oars shall be made of timber. Plywood is a permitted material for the blade of the oar." see full measurement rules here. Not sure if this means that plywood is only permitted for the blades or that is has not been considered that plywood would ever be used for the shafts or looms. Quite a number of hollow box section oars have been made, some very nice, light and efficient ones by Topher Dawson at Ullapool, but I think only with plywood blades.

Hi Dave, I've only just seen this and realise that you might already have built your oars. I wouldn't recommend building oars with a plywood box section. It would be better to have the grain running in one direction only, along the length of the oar rather than having half of it going the opposite way with plywood. Especially in the fore and aft sections of the box where nearly all of the bending stress is carried. Yes, in theory you could have plywood 'sides' of the box, which really are only serving to keep the fore and aft load carrying sections apart. However, in terms of structural integrity of your oar, gluing end grain plywood to the fore and aft faces will not be as secure as gluing to timber with the grain going lengthwise. Better to get some nice straight grained timber than plywood, I think. I think this is what Admin is alluding to in his reply but hope this helps also.

The handle end might be solid timber or a timber core to a plywood shell. Hi Dave, plywood oars would place a lot of confidence in the properties of waterproof glue and quality of the joints. The box section would have to be 100percent watertight or else the dreaded rot would set in and undo your good work. Plywood is heavier than the basic woods it is made from. eg the density of plywood id about 600kg/m 3 and Douglas fir is about 520kg/m 3. It would be really interesting to hear more about your design concept. With oars, balance is as important as weight and gearing is as important as stiffness. For example, when carbon fibre shafts were introduced , many river rowers found that they were too stiff and it was like hitting concrete at the start of the stroke.Back problems were the consequence. Oars are still a subject which is very open and it will be interesting to see the range of designs (within the Rules of course) at the Worlds. Cheers SHUG

I was browsing the Forum (as you do) and re-vsited the table with oar comparisons. I noted that in this table, Coigach give their Bow oar a gearing of 2.45 and the Stroke oar a gearing of 2.97. If both rowers had their hands moving at a typical 1metre/sec it means that the bow would have a target speed of 4.7 knots and the stroke would have target speed of 5.5knots. Does this means that with Coigach, either the Bow has a more rapid Drive than Stroke or vice-versa. Interesting!
