From my very limited use of cords to control the rudder, and from that experience my complete faith in a tiller as the best option, I wonder why I see so many clubs using a cord arrangement. Can anyone enlighten me as to the superiority of having to use two hands when one will do, leaving the cox free to eat a sandwich or smoke a cigar ? In my ignorance I sometimes think this practice has spread like a virus by knacky boat builders who like the idea of pieces of string being enough to control their superbly fine boats and to hell with the poor cox who has to live with the reality.
